What the NRA course covers

Basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and for responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and where to take your training next. Students shoot roughly 100 rounds.

You need Basic Pistol first

The NRA sets the entry bar for this course: you must be able to demonstrate safe gun handling, shoot a group, zero a firearm and clean it. An NRA Basic Pistol certificate is the usual way to show that. This is not a course you can start cold.

What you take away

The NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, the NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and a course completion certificate.

Other courses

  • NRA Basic Pistol

Eight hours that take you from never having held a handgun to shooting one safely. This is where new shooters should start.

  • License to Carry (LTC)

The six-hour class Texas requires before you can apply for a licence to carry a handgun. We run it once a month in Brownsville.

  • Women's-Only Basic Pistol

The same eight-hour NRA Basic Pistol course, taught by a woman, with only women in the room.

  • Personal Protection Outside the Home

The top of the ladder. Carrying and using a concealed pistol responsibly outside the home — and, before any of that, avoiding the confrontation altogether.

  • NRA Basic Rifle

Rifle, not pistol — and it sits outside the pistol ladder. You can take this one at any time, with no prior course.

  • Private, One-on-One Instruction

One instructor, one student, at your pace. Booked directly with us, as often or as rarely as you want.
